PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE END OF THE NEWSLETTER  Aug. 9 – Rev. Pat Jobe: ‘Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton’ Two of our most radical and world-changing ancestors were both Unitarians. They saw needs that needed to be met and organized a response. Their kindnesses have inspired so many right down to today, the here and now. The Rev. Pat Jobe joined our Fellowship on Aug. 1, 2020. He is married to his lovely spouse Gabe and is an enthusiastic supporter of UU Lake Norman, FeedNC, Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry, the Barefoot Ministry, and all work done by UUs in our area. Pat Jobe: ‘Elvis, Babe Ruth and Luke’ When my son Luke was born on an Aug. 16, I went to Wikipedia and hoped to find some inspiring North Star who shared a birthday with him. Although surely there must be dozens, I wandered down to people who died on that date and found both Elvis and Babe Ruth. We’ll reflect on all three and how they lived their lives, or in the case of my now 30-year-old son, how he is still living his life.                                My T-shirt display last Sunday was part of how gratified I was to be with the Unitarians of Lake Norman that day. In case you missed it, the T-shirt from the dog fence builds was showing my deep gratitude to all of you who make it happen. And don’t doubt for a second that ALL of you make it happen. The dog fence ministry is supported with an annual gift from our congregational budget and a Share the Plate Sunday collection. Beyond that, a number of us actually show up to build. My brother and I have been absent from fence builds for several months, but we hope to remedy that soon. Brother Bill Jobe does build lots of dog houses. The ministry is not just for the dogs — it gives love and compassion to the people for whom we build as well. Great work. Great encouragement. The other T-shirt was from the statewide Siembra town hall in Greensboro that was held the day before, on Aug. 1. About 300 people from at least five urban counties gathered to listen to speeches and watch native dances by young people, some of them very young. We have also supported Siembra through Share the Plate. Click here if you want to learn more it. Siembra has recovered nearly $400,000 in wages stolen from immigrant workers who were told they did not need to be paid because they were here illegally and their employers could have them deported if they complained. The organization is doing great work which we have helped pay for, protested along with and will continue to work for their goals of decent housing, health care, working conditions and education for all North Carolinians. Big love and encouragement to you all. And thank you for welcoming all our visitors last Sunday! The Unitarians of Lake Norman are a great bunch. A called church conference will be held this Sunday, Aug. 9, after that day’s service, to vote on Revised Bylaws. Join Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry this Saturday at 9 a.m. to get Hatchie off his chain and into a safe, fenced space. The address is 312 Cherry St. in Lincolnton. Work alongside other animal lovers who want to make a real difference. We welcome all skill levels and will show you everything you need to do. Just bring work gloves and a green shirt you do not mind getting dirty, sturdy boots or closed-toe shoes and your water bottle to stay hydrated. Then stay until the end to watch Hatchie play in his new space! ___________________________________ Our next volunteer shift at FeedNC will be Aug. 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. No experience is necessary as we chop, cook, serve and clean for this Mooresville nonprofit.
