Aug. 2 – Rev. Pat Jobe: ‘Welcome Back and a Confession’

Pat Jobe: ‘Welcome Back and a Confession’ In the Third Century, St. Augustine of Hippo came up with an awful, hateful, dehumanizing idea called “original sin.” Although the handle cannot be found in the original Christian writings, the hellfire and damnation crowd picked it up and ran with it for the next 1,700 years. Bummer! The Rev. Pat Jobe joined our Fellowship on Aug. 1, 2020. He is married to his lovely spouse Gabe and is an enthusiastic supporter of UU Lake Norman, FeedNC, Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry, the Barefoot Ministry, and all work done by UUs in our area.   Services can be viewed live at 3:10 p.m., and later for replays, by clicking here to reach them on our website. Information on upcoming services can also be found on our Facebook page. Aug. 9 – Rev. Pat Jobe: ‘Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton’Two of our most radical and world-changing ancestors were both Unitarians. They saw needs that needed to be met and organized a response. Their kindnesses have inspired so many right down to today, the here and now. We helped UU Justice NC raise $10,000 for hydration packs for immigrant farm workers. Many of our folks gave individually, and $200 came from the ministerial discretion fund. And as it turns out, we have not stopped supporting the immigrant families in Davidson. Designated gifts are still coming into All Souls in Forest City and will be paid directly to the families. Help from eight different congregations came in lavishly and we were able to pay $20,000 in rent assistance. All Souls is still caring for a number of people in Rutherford County, Gastonia and Charlotte. We recently worked with a woman who needs heart surgery and a family who lost water service in Spindale. This is the tip of the iceberg. Love to all as we are part of a wonderful, caring, active congregation during dark days.P.S. from Gandhi: “It is quite proper to resist and attack a system, but to resist and attack its author is tantamount to resisting and attacking oneself. For we are all tarred with the same brush, and are children of one and the same Creator, and as such the divine powers within us are infinite. To slight a single human being is to slight those divine powers, and thus to harm not only that being but with him the whole world.”  A called church conference will be held Aug. 9, after that day’s service, to vote on Revised Bylaws. Choir meetingHey, all you UU singers! We will have a brief organizational meeting following the service this Sunday. Please attend. We need a lot of information such as your email addresses, musical knowledge, Sunday availability, etc. So come to the service so we can get things started. For more, contact Doug Wall at 980-505-9903. Fellowship members relax at a Hawaiian pool party hosted by  Andi and Ray Smith. The July 25 party was an auction item, and good times were had by all. Our next volunteer shift at FeedNC will be Aug. 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. No experience is necessary as we chop, cook, serve and clean for this Mooresville nonprofit. During UUJNC’s July meetings, we learned about and took actions addressing Duke Power’s Carbon Plan.  We heard about the Christian Nationalism movement and the Zoom training available to learn effective responses.  We developed our understanding of the existing threats to healthcare in North Carolina and were given contacts and talking points to use with elected officials.  The fundraising for migrant workers’ hydration packets collected $10,000.  Thanks to the individuals and the Fellowship for contributions. Everyone is invited to join the weekly Friday Action Hour, a virtual gathering of justice-seeking friends where we take action together and nurture our spirits for the work ahead.  It’s an opportunity to live our values.
