Nov. 8 – Rev. Pat Jobe: ‘Beyond Jesus and Buddha’
To the sticklers for rules, getting beyond Jesus or Buddha or Mohammed, peace be upon him, would be unthinkable. But we think in an altogether different way. Our fundamental thought is that ultimate reality must be big enough to contain all. If it were not so, how did so many different views get into our viewfinders?

The Rev. Pat Jobe joined our Fellowship on Aug. 1, 2020. He is married to his lovely spouse Gabe and is an enthusiastic supporter of UU Lake Norman, FeedNC, Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry, the Barefoot Ministry, and all work done by UUs in our area.

Services can be viewed live at 3:10 p.m. Sundays, and later for replays, by clicking here to reach them on our website. Information on upcoming services can also be found on our Facebook page.

Nov. 15 – Mooresville Interfaith Thanksgiving Service
The Unitarians of Lake Norman will not meet at the Quaker Meeting House in Davidson. Instead, we will take part in the interfaith service from 3-5 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 164 Fairview Rd. in Mooresville. Our congregation will collect donations of new gloves and other cold-weather clothing such as scarves and hats until the Nov. 15 service.

Sunday we had 43 at service and filled two big tables at Crafty Burg’r. I counted at least ten regular attenders who were not there. We still face the possibility of crowding at the Quaker Meeting House, which is a great problem to have. Thanks to all who welcomed our visitors.

Why do we matter? Luz Zambrano succeeding in court in front of an immigration judge gave us a reason to applaud at our Day of the Dead service last Sunday. Memories of great ancestors ran long and warmly. We sang happy birthday to Bruce Henderson, who does such a bang-up good job on our newsletter. Mary Nicholson reminded us to remember those who have gone before us who may not have been kin, but did touch our lives as friends, teachers, coaches and others who were there to encourage us. Deep thanks to all.

P.S. Thanks to all who donated to our Share the Plate collection last Sunday, we raised $1,437 for the Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry — better known as the dog fence people. Thanks to our generous members and friends!

                Pledge Drive Begins

Our annual pledge drive to support our Fellowship kicked off last Sunday.  This year’s theme is We Can All Take a Bite Out of the Budget. Our goal is $84,050 and to date we have received $26,283 in pledges, getting things nicely underway. If we all participate, we will be successful. Pledge cards are available at services or you can email your pledge to admin@uuflkn.org. We look forward to hearing from you.

Volunteers are needed for our upcoming shift at FeedNC, the food-centered nonprofit in Mooresville, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12. No experience is needed to help chop, cook, serve and clean at this busy nonprofit. Contact Jim Arnold by clicking here if you can help.

Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry’s fence build for this Saturday, Nov. 7, has been canceled. But here are several other dates over the rest of the year that need volunteers:Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 14-15: Sheepdog Trials at Rural Hill in Huntersville — join us at our booth and raffle.
Sunday, Nov. 29: Holiday parade in Lincolnton and on Saturday, Dec. 5, a parade in Denver. We need help at both parades to decorate our float and pass out dog treats to spectators.
Saturday, Dec. 19 at 9 a.m.: The last scheduled fence build of the year (location will be announced later).

We hope you will volunteer at a fence build or at one of the other events. It is so rewarding to see dogs released from their chains and safe in a fenced area. No experience is necessary. We will teach you what you need to know and have all the necessary tools. Please consider making a year-end donation to Heart of the Carolinas so we can continue our work in 2027. Becky Schisler, a member of Piedmont UU, is also the organizer of the Coalition for Cultural Compassion and the Compassion Closet.  Not only do the groups provide assistance of clothing, diapers and household items throughout the year to families in need, they also help with holiday gifts for families.  Becky says they still have 81 kids who need sponsors for holiday gifts, with an additional 20 families on the waitlist. She says they’re working to find sponsors for about 40 more families. Click here to register as a sponsor and make a local child’s Christmas special. If you have any questions, ask Pat or Doug Wall, who always sponsor some kids and love it!
