Dec. 21 – Abbess Ayya Sudhamma: ‘Journey to Wisdom’
Abbess Sudhamma will share her amazing journey in traveling the world and studying Theravada Buddhism.
Abbess Ayya Sudhamma was raised in Charlotte. She was an attorney before leaving home in 1998 to become a Buddhist nun. She received her novice orientation in 1999 and higher ordination in 2003. The Abbess is the first American woman ordained in Sri Lanka, and was recognized by the UN in Bangkok as an “Outstanding Woman in Buddhism.” Abbess Sudhamma served as the resident monk at the Greenville, S.C. Buddhist Vihana for over eight years, and visited a monastery in Australia for most of 2012. She is now glad to be back home as Abbess of the Charlotte Buddhist Vihara.
