May 31 – Jason Hart: ‘Kirtan, a Musical Meditation Practice’Kirtan is a powerful practice of leaving behind our thoughts constrained by stress, fear, worry or other distractions and opening our experience of our connection to the universe.Jason Hart began his spiritual journey as a teenager in Michigan, after reading Dr. Raymond Moody’s Life After Life (about near-death experiences), then exploring Native American practices in the Lakota Sioux tradition. He later turned toward Eastern traditions, studying Theravada Buddhism and serving on the board of the Charlotte Buddhist Vihara. His path then led to Advaita Vedanta and Kirtan, where he discovered Neem Karoli Baba and later met Krishna Das, a renowned Kirtan practitioner. Today, Jason devotes himself to Kirtan as a path of meditation, devotion, and unity.

Services can be viewed live at 3:10 p.m., and later for replays, by visiting our website. Information on upcoming services can also be found on our Facebook page.

June 7 – Rev. Pat Jobe: ‘Marking Time Near Our Birthday’We might do things five days from now just as we are doing them now, but what about five years from now? How will we function as a congregation in 2031? Our congregation turns 16 on June 13. How are we doing the things we feel are best about congregational life? We have been challenged to do more. What might that look like? The Rev. Pat Jobe joined our Fellowship on Aug. 1, 2020. He is married to his lovely spouse Gabe and is an enthusiastic supporter of UU Lake Norman, FeedNC, Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry, the Barefoot Ministry, and all work done by UUs in our area.

Sylvia Abney’s car was totaled recently. She was not injured and her girls were not in the car with her. The Care Committee has sent a card. Care for Ed and Julia Boye is ongoing. Grief at the scam artists tricking Pat and Doug Wall is ongoing.

This remarkable congregation is about to turn 16. One of our chief bakers is in the hunt for cookies on June 7. They should not be eaten in the sanctuary, even though you will hear that I once broke that rule.

Love to all and thank you most kindly for the opportunity to serve.

Share the Plate will be June 7 and proceeds will benefit the minister’s discretionary fund. Most of you know that we’re helping folks in financial crisis with these funds.

The Board is proposing several changes to our existing bylaws. Our Fellowship will vote on these changes in August. We have posted the proposed revised bylaws on our website to ensure everyone has time to review them. Click here to read the proposals. If you have any questions about these changes, please contact Jim Price or any member of the Board.

Auction update
Thanks so much for paying for your auction items so promptly. To date, we have received $10,214 toward our total of $11,549 in successful bids. To see some great pictures from the evening posted on our website, click here. If you have pictures from the night, please share them with us! Send them to admin@uulakenorman.org.

Why is UU Lake Norman important to you?
We asked members and friends that question at the end of a service a few weeks ago. We received some wonderful responses. You can see many of those responses on our website — click here to read Our Members Voices. We’d love to add your voice there too.

Quarterly Humanist Gathering
The quarterly meeting of the Humanists of Lake Norman will take place on Sunday, June 7 at the Friends Meeting House in Davidson, 625 South St., following the UU Lake Norman service. A social gathering will start at 4:15 p.m., followed by the program at 4:30 p.m. It will be a 30-minute video presentation of The Religion of Democracy by Fish Stark, executive director of the American Humanist Association and a UU Humanist, that was delivered at the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis. The video is entertaining as well as enlightening. It will be followed a group discussion. Humanists and UUs as well as all interested in this life philosophy based on reason and human dignity are welcome. For questions: Steve Whitfield or Jeff Blum.

Blue Waves-LKN will hold its next protest on Friday, May 29 from 3-5 p.m. The location is the northwest corner of Brawley School and Williamson roads in Mooresville. The day’s theme is to oppose the gerrymandering allowed by the Supreme Court in the Louisiana v. Callais decision. Some states in the South, within a few hours or days of the April 29 decision, began remapping their legislative districts to simply erase majority-Black districts.                                                    __________________________

Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry is back with another fence-build at 9 a.m. this Saturday, May 30.
