Sept. 6 – Rev. Pat Jobe: ‘Ambition for the Common Good’

Pat Jobe: ‘Ambition for the Common Good’ When the Gandhi character in the movie is told, “You are very ambitious,” he replied, “Oh, I hope not.” But he was. We know that. His ambition was to use nonviolence to drive the British out of India. He succeeded after many long decades and years in prison, but his remarkable ambition was realized. Do we have that kind of ambition for the common good? The Rev. Pat Jobe joined our Fellowship on Aug. 1, 2020. He is married to his lovely spouse Gabe and is an enthusiastic supporter of UU Lake Norman, FeedNC, Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry, the Barefoot Ministry, and all work done by UUs in our area. Sept. 13 – Rev. Pat Jobe: ‘Three Powerful Words’ We think we know the three most powerful words, but maybe they are not “I love you.” Maybe they’re “That’s all, folks,” or “Come on down.” From a little girl who broke her mother’s favorite vase comes a memory that may give us a different point of view.  Unitarians of Lake Norman clearly enjoyed a poetry session that was hosted recently by Kim Lucas.  Join Heart of the Carolinas UU Animal Ministry this Saturday, Sept. 5, as we build much-needed fences for two large dogs. Work starts at 9 a.m. No experience is needed and all tools are provided. The address is 6550 Deerwood Tr., Vale. A large and vocal group gathered at the August meeting of Mooresville’s Board of Commissioners to protest the construction of an Islamic center in Mooresville. Speakers suggested that the use of the space for a house of worship — which is allowed under the relevant zoning — somehow excluded a Muslim mosque. Numerous voices cited the dangers of allowing Muslims a gathering place. The scene was at least troubling, if not horrifying. The next Mooresville commissioners meeting will be next Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Town Hall, which is at 413 N. Main St. We hope to have a large showing of people who value the First Amendment, which clearly tells us there is freedom of religion in the United States. Click here to email Jim Arnold if you can be there. _________________________________ Our guest speaker this past Sunday, UNC Charlotte Professor Chris Cameron, has invited Fish Stark, executive director of the American Humanist Association and a UU, to speak at UNCC on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The location on campus is yet to be determined. Stark will speak on “Confronting Christian Nationalism.” The talk coincides with the UU Justice Ministry’s upcoming Dogwood Faith Project aimed at the same issue. The event is cosponsored by the Humanists of Piedmont NC — click here to email the group.  Last week, our guest speaker at Action Hour was Rev. Amy Brooks Paradise, who served as our pastor for many years. She is now the U.S. Program Coordinator for GreenFaith, the multi-faith international organization focused on climate justice. Amy spoke about the Covenant for Our Future, a campaign to unite people of conscience to resist the greatest threats. She urges all of us to inform members of Congress about the true impacts of HR-1 (the Big Beautiful Bill). Hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians have lost food stamp (SNAP) benefits. Medicaid funding has been cut, with an estimated 650,000 set to lose medical coverage. Please find the facts presented in our Google document (link below). Mooresville Interfaith Thanksgiving Service Unitarians of Lake Norman will not meet at the Quaker Meeting House in Davidson on Nov. 15. Instead, we will take part in the Mooresville Interfaith Thanksgiving Service that day from 3-5 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 164 Fairview Rd. in Mooresville.
